About alt-it.org
A catalogue, news site and set of guides to help businesses adopt alternative IT: Linux, open-source software, and independent vendors of software, hardware and IT services.
What we do
We champion alternatives, and we're honest about them. Every listing and guide sets out the real risks of adopting an option and practical ways to reduce them, and says when not to switch. Facts about price, licensing, ownership, data location and certifications link to their source, with the date we checked it.
We write for business owners, IT leads, and the IT providers and MSPs who support them. Our advice is written with the UK and EU in mind, with UK GDPR and GDPR as the default compliance frame, but it isn't specific to one country.
How we're paid for
The site is free to read. It is paid for by affiliate links, sponsorship and, in time, display ads from sources that don't track visitors. None of these affects what we list, what we say about it, or the order it appears in. Our editorial standards set out the rules, and how we label commercial content shows what each label looks like.
Practising what we preach
Our pages load nothing from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta or Apple, and every build checks this. Everything a page needs is served by us, and text uses your device's own fonts. Search runs in your browser, so what you type stays on your device. The site is hosted on Cloudflare for now; we plan to move to a European host as it grows.
Who publishes alt-it.org
alt-it.org is published by Captivated Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 15936109. Registered office: Electric Works C/O Captivated Ltd, 3 Concourse Way, Sheffield, United Kingdom, S1 2BJ.
Captivated Ltd also makes software. If we list a product made by Captivated Ltd or a related company, it carries the label "Made by our publisher" and the same risks and mitigations as any other listing.
